Shopping, Dining, Geo-Caching, and Home Improvement

My parents were in town for a couple of days, so we packed the weekend full with the standard shopping, going out to eat, and drinking beer, but also added in plenty of home improvement and some geo-caching. I think Isaac and my dad drank 4 growlers of beer between the two of them!

On Saturday my mom and I had a super successful trip to the mall, while Isaac and my dad fixed some electrical outlets around the house. We took them to the Pumphouse for lunch and Flavor of India for dinner, which they loved.

On Sunday I did a slightly shorter ride while Isaac rode up to "Painwood" Reservoir so that my parents could take me geo-caching. Basically, people hide treasures all over the place that you search for using a GPS system, after finding the coordinates online. People take "travel bugs" from one geo-cache to another, then track their travel online.

In the afternoon my dad and Isaac put up MaxLoad shelving on one side of the garage, and Gladiator Gear Tracks on the other side. My mom and I did some more shopping in town, then came home and helped supervise! We did one more dinner out on Sunday night, taking them to our favorite pizza place - Proto's. They loved it!


It was a perfect spot for extra water bottles and extra wheels!

Skiing Photos

Isaac and I had an awesome ski trip to Vail/Copper a couple of weeks ago. We spent the night in Vail, hanging out with some college friends, then skied in Copper the following day. It was amazing skiing - nice groomed trails with some fresh powder, but nothing too thick. It's much better than the icy slopes back east, but we're still not used to the moguls that form out here. I can't wait to ski at Copper again, it's perfect terrain for us.

More Wheelbuilding

Today, Steve, Dave and I hung out and built a pair of wheels.  Steve had some sweet Campy hubs and some rims that were dead, so as a B-day gift to himself we rebuilt the hubs up with some fresh rims and spokes.  The rear was a standard 3-cross but up front we went with 2-cross; it'll be interesting to hear what Steve has to say about how the wheels feel after tomorrow's Presidents' Day ride.

I found some photos on my camera from February 3, but I just can't seem to remember what happened that day... It's like we totally blocked the whole day from our memory, and I have no idea what we were doing. But anyway, I thought they were nice photos, so I wanted to post them anyway.




Regardless of what did happen that day, I know Isaac doesn't like to even try to recall, so we don't talk about it - to each other or anyone else. But for some reason, ESPN has completely disappeared from our TV and our computer ever since then. What a strange day!

Taking Shape

I hear blog nation yearns for another posting.  See?  When a once-in-a-lifetime perfect season clogs the toilet like a giant 5-month turd, the plunger of pain stretches far and wide.

I've been spending some time lately putting together the plan, or as Mud & Cowbells would say, "Za Plan".  This is mostly a process of determining exactly how you royally screwed up last season, and putting together a new training plan with corrections that you'll mostly ignore or follow until hubris determines it must be set aside -- like on a group ride when some nitwit has the audacity to think about putting his rear wheel a clean couple of bike lengths ahead of you on a climb.

So, I've read the Training Bible a few times, and I'm getting to the point where I need some other perspectives.  Since my email isn't flooded with coaches offering to waive their fees, I glean what I can from people who've been there and done that.  This article also has some interesting insight; well, trust me, it does once you reverse engineer all the training data in the picture.

Anyway, this year will be ripe with changes:

1. Weeks are dead to me.  The idea that I need X hours or Y kilojoules in a week is a just a formula for disaster that leaves me putting in monster weekends to make up for a busy week of work, poor weather, or whatever else.
2. No mediocre days: make workouts more intense and rest days more light.
3. Fight burn-out.  I've done a complete 180 on the "listening to music while working out" debate.  Do whatever you've got to do to keep fresh.  Though, readers be warned, iPod-toting clowns walking 0.5 mph on the treadmill at LAC West will still draw my ire.
4. Four-week cycles are not for everyone.  They might be for me, but I'm not so convinced.  I'll try and pay better attention to the quality of my workouts to determine when extended rest is required.
5. Mix it up.  I'm swearing off the trainer.  When weather is a pain I've been making a concerted effort to hit the gym, either for lifting or running.  Ideally I'd keep one rest day every so often as a day to run -- this in an effort to be ready for some sprint workouts once 'cross beckons.
6. Train your weaknesses!  This is the one rule that everyone knows about but conveniently forgets.  So far I've been pretty good about this, but yikes, it's still early.
